Learning and cognition in radar applications
Abstract:
Cognitive radar has gained much attention in the last decade due to its ability to adapt both the transmitter and receiver to changes in the environment and provide flexibility for different scenarios as compared to conventional radar systems. One of the several applications considered for radar cognition is spectrum sharing with coexisting communication services to efficiently utilize limited available spectrum. This talk introduces a new paradigm of sub-Nyquist radars that employ the Xampling framework (compression + sensing) and pave the way for designing cognitive radars. State-of-the-art hardware prototypes, designed to demonstrate the feasibility of real-time spectrum sharing radars, will be presented. Finally, we connect the cognition in radars to some interesting applications of deep learning.
Biography of the speaker:
Dr. Kumar Vijay Mishra obtained Ph.D. in electrical engineering and M.S. in mathematics from The University of Iowa in 2015, and M.S. in electrical engineering from Colorado State University in 2012, while working on NASA’s Global Precipitation Mission Ground Validation (GPM-GV) weather radars. He received his B. Tech. summa cum laude (Gold Medal, Honors) in electronics and communication engineering from the National Institute of Technology, Hamirpur, India in 2003. During 2003-2007, he worked on military surveillance radars as a research scientist at the Electronics and Radar Development Establishment (LRDE), Defense Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in Bengaluru. He was a research intern at Mitsubishi Electric Research Labs (Cambridge) and at Qualcomm (San Jose) in 2015. During 2015-2017, he was Andrew and Erna Finci Viterbi and Lady Davis postdoctoral fellow at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Technion - Israel Institute of Technology.
He is currently with the U.S. Army Research Laboratory at Adelphi, Maryland, USA. He has been Visiting Scholar at IIHR - Hydroscience & Engineering, The University of Iowa since 2015, SnT Research Fellow at University of Luxembourg, and Technical Advisor to automotive radar startup Hertzwell, Singapore since 2018. He is the recipient of US Army Research Laboratory Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellowship (2018), Royal Meteorological Society Quarterly Journal Editor's Prize (2017), Lady Davis Fellowship (2016-2017), Andrew and Erna Finci Viterbi Fellowship (twice awarded, 2015, 2016), Technion EE Excellent Undergraduate Adviser Award (2017), Cornell Base-of-Pyramid Narrative Competition Prize (2009), Altera Forum Guru Challenge Prize (2008), DRDO LRDE Scientist of the Year Award (2006), NITH Director’s Gold Medals for 1st rank in the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering and entire university during the undergraduate commencement (2003), and NITH Best Student Award (2003). His research interests include radar systems (theory and hardware), signal processing, information theory, communications, electromagnetics and deep learning.
