Title:  "Global Climate Change: Causes, Concerns and Commitments"

Abstract: In this talk, The speaker will be discussing the basic physics of climate changes, past and future climate change scenarios, how we use climate models, what are the impacts of climate change and what are our concerns and what are the commitments made by India to cope up with climate change. He will be specifically talking about the long term climate trends over Kerala and Western Ghats and about the recent extreme weather events over Kerala including the 2018 and 2019 floods.

About the speaker: Dr. M. Rajeevan, Secretary, Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India, is well known for his research work in Tropical Meteorology including monsoon variability, seasonal monsoon forecasts, climate change, and prediction of convective weather systems. He has more than 35 years of experience, both as an operational forecaster and also as an active researcher. He contributed significantly for developing many application tools and prediction models for societal applications like long-range monsoon prediction models.  He was also involved in the development of objective criteria for declaring the monsoon onset over Kerala and monitoring the active and break spells of the Indian summer monsoon.These criteria are being used by the India Meteorological Department for operational use. He is a Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences (IASc), the Indian National Science Academy (INSA), and the National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI); member of the International Academy of Astronautics, Paris;  High-level Adviser on Climate Services for the Commission on Climatology (CCl) of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO): He is also a member of the Governing Councils of IISER Kolkata, Pune and Tirupati.
