Kerala Coir Sector features IIT Palakkad Expertise
The Coir Expert Committee, appointed by the Kerala State Government to address challenges in the coir sector, has submitted its final report to the Honourable Chief Minister of Kerala. The five-member committee, chaired by Sankar Krishnapillai, Professor of Mechanical Engineering, IIT Madras, includes Dr. Divya P.V, Associate Professor from the Department of Civil Engineering at IIT Palakkad. Other members are K. Balan, Professor of Civil Engineering, expert in coir-related studies, Rakesh Krishnan, Associate Professor, School of Management Studies, CUSAT and the Chairman of the Coir Corporation, representing industry stakeholders.
The report provides key recommendations on improving coconut husk procurement, coir fibre production, spinning and manufacturing sectors, exports, small-scale enterprises, public sector undertakings, coir societies, research and development, and the use of coir geotextiles in infrastructure projects.
The report serves as a roadmap for rejuvenating the coir sector and boosting its economic contribution to Kerala.
